This work contains seven distinct though related studies of issues arising as to the ontological
status of natural languages. It argues for a platonist view of these matters, that is, the view
that sentences and languages are abstract objects. It thus rejects claims that languages are
biological entities. It also rejects claims that there is an alternative to naturalistic and platonist
views involving 'mind-dependent abstract objects'.
